A whole house refurbishment with extension on loch voil, balquhiddar. A key driver for this project was to connect the ‘house with place’ by addressing the circulation and orientation of the existing dwelling. The design provides a new entrance and passageway connecting the east and west, with new rooms and vistas connecting the north and south – by opening up to the shoreline with views of loch voil and beyond. Naturally weathered materials and sheltered forms have been integrated into the design, not only to create a synergy with the environment but also a building that naturally responds to its context. A rural retreat, an escape from the city.
