The brief was to create ‘something special’ and more space for a growing family home – principally within the attic - with the preference to use the existing staircase location for any new access provision and continue to access natural daylight in the centre of the house [provided by a skylight to the top of the existing stairwell]. As such, the design solution therefore required something bespoke and crafted insofar as a lightweight timber sculpture, designed to suspend from the roof trusses where it would meet the rest of the house built up from a solid stone base. Sculptural and open, the staircase provides a new centre-piece and experience for the home.
