renovation

including external glazing

This proposal transforms a detached Victorian family home through a comprehensive yet restrained reconfiguration of the existing ground floor. Opening two principal rooms to the rear, together with the introduction of a new connection to the front lounge, creates a sequence of generous, interconnected living spaces centred around family life. The intervention strengthens the relationship between house and garden, draws natural daylight deep into the plan, and fully embraces the home's remarkable elevated views across the city. The result is a calm, contemporary environment that fundamentally reshapes the way the family inhabits their home.

Although blessed with generous Victorian glazing, the house had gradually become compromised by a series of poorly considered alterations and extensions that obscured its connection to the garden and surrounding landscape. The principal dining space had become dark and inward-looking, with little sense of its setting or the panoramic views beyond. Carefully judged interventions restore this relationship, allowing daylight to animate the interior throughout the day while framing views as an integral part of everyday living. At its heart, a new open-plan kitchen, dining and living space provides a warm, sociable setting that encourages family life while maintaining an uninterrupted visual connection to the landscaped garden and city beyond.

A rich marriage of old and new, refined through careful detailing and expertly executed craftsmanship, retains the warmth and character of the original house while introducing a restrained contemporary architectural language. Existing fabric and new interventions sit comfortably alongside one another, creating a cohesive environment that feels both timeless and modern. The result is a balanced transformation that enhances the character of the home while delivering a light-filled, adaptable setting designed for contemporary family living.
