heritage & conservation area

A grand reconfiguration of the rear of a traditional tenement terrace, carefully designed within the constraints of a conservation area. The proposal seeks to transform the relationship between house and garden, opening up the rear of the plan to create a generous, full-width family kitchen and dining space that becomes the heart of the home.

Key internal openings are selectively repositioned to improve spatial flow and draw evening daylight deeper into the plan, enhancing the quality of the existing accommodation while retaining the character of the original building. Material choices and detailing are considered to sit quietly alongside the historic fabric, allowing the new interventions to feel both contemporary and respectful.

At basement level, the project unlocks the potential of previously under-utilised service spaces. Existing doors and windows are consolidated into a single modern intervention, incorporating a large sliding door that provides seamless, level access to the rear garden. This transformation allows the basement to function as a vibrant social space, flooded with light and directly connected to the outdoors - redefining what is often considered forgotten space and integrating it fully into everyday family life.
