mews housing

regeneration

This project proposes a mews development within Queen’s Park, Glasgow, adopting a traditional mews typology that complements the established massing and spatial arrangement of the surrounding tenement context. The scheme responds sensitively to the character of the area, reinforcing the urban grain while introducing a contemporary residential form.

The design takes direct inspiration from the site’s existing courtyard wall, using it as a defining feature to structure the development. A series of enclosed courtyards are introduced to organise the dwellings, creating a sense of privacy, enclosure, and a clear relationship between built form and open space.

To optimise internal amenity, the typical residential layout is inverted, locating primary living spaces at first-floor level. This approach maximises access to natural light, improves outlook, and enhances spatial quality, while allowing ground-floor accommodation to engage more discreetly with the courtyards.

The proposal is carefully considered in relation to neighbouring properties, ensuring a high standard of residential amenity through controlled overlooking, appropriate scale, and a respectful response to the surrounding built environment. Overall, the scheme aims to deliver a contextually grounded and well-integrated residential development that supports the continued evolution of the Queen’s Park area.
